Her name is Pauline Fresnais and she has 23 years old. In a few days, she goes to spend two months to the site of project « bamboo lemur » (Vohitrarivo). She will do a study of eating behavior and activity rhythm of the two largest groups (45 in 48 individuals). This study is part of a broader study of the capacity of the habitat (previously announced), whose challenge is to find a balance between the needs of villagers whose survival depends on the exploitation of their lands and those of greater bamboo lemurs living in bamboo forests.

With support of our partner Cap West, The AFSGH has funded the airfare of Pauline (Antananarivo-Paris) and the salary of the guide who will accompany her on the field between monitorings conducted by the project.

The AFSGH also provides camping equipment for the camp where Pauline will live.

Finally with the support of AFVPZ, The AFSGH could buy a new GPS and scales that Pauline will need to weigh food consumed by greater bamboo lemurs.

Pauline will give some French lessons during her stay for children but also for adults.

Nary Randrianarijaona, the representative of AFSGH in Madagascar, will accompany her a few days to prepare the World Environment Day (WED) to be held June 15, 2012 at Tsaratanana in which the AFSGH will be very involved (more info soon …).

With the support of our partners (Costwold Wildlife Park, SECAS, Muséum de Besançon and Cap West), private donations and the weekends « Conservation » in Sigean and Mulhouse, the AFSGH has gathered enough money for rebuilding the school Vohitrarivo (project « Bamboo lemur »), whose main building was hit by the cyclone Giovanna.

As we previously mentioned, the Grant « Jean-Robert » where has been sent this money, has been allocated this year to the rebuilding of the school.

The first stone (symbolic stone) of the new building was installed on May 21 by family Robert, sponsor of the school, Delphine Roullet, President of AFSGH, Nary Randrianarijaona, representative of the association in Madagascar, the committee of education composed of « parents » of the village (=older villagers), the King, the President of fokontany, the Director of the school and Mamy Rakotoarijaona, Director of Ranomafana national park and coordinator of the project »bamboo lemur ».

School supplies were distributed : schoolbooks collected in France by family Basquin-Matthey, various books and school supplies donated by family Robert, wirstbands « Helspimus » et several games.

Awards were distributed to the best students : colored pencils and picture books.

Below the movie…

A warm thank to family Robert for their implication in actions of conservation and education of the association and for their unwavering support.

(à partir du rapport de/ from report of Anselmo Andrianandrasana)

Groupe 4 (Vohibe Ouest) : 1 couple.

Tiré du rapport/from report of d’Anselmo Andrianandrasana et/and al.

In October-November 2011, the AFSGH funded a study of greater bamboo lemur populations in the National Park Zahamena where traces were found in 2010. This study was conducted by The Aspinall Foundation, Groupe d’Etude et de Recherche des Primates de Madagascar (GERP) and association Mitsinjo.

Again no direct observation of greater bamboo lemur could be made, but many more new tracks were recorded than in 2010. See photos below: Bamboo consumed by greater bamboo lemur.

Populations of Hapalemur occidentalis, also present in the park and little known, were also followed during this study: abundance of the species, habitat description, diet and activities rythm.

Several species of lemurs live in the park and have also been observed during this study: indri, Lepilemur, diadem sifaka, avahi, ruffed lemur, brown lemur, and traces of ayes-ayes.

Although the park is protected, many lemur traps were found. Anthropogenic pressures are numerous: cut wood and bamboo, hunting (with dogs sometimes), fishing, gathering honey, mining…
